Bloomfield Wins at Coventry
After so many recent races being cancelled, it was with great relief that Darren was finally able to get some outdoor racing under his belt at the Astroturf track at Coventry over the weekend.
The weather was thankfully dry and cold, but at least there was no rain. The track was still damp however, and for Darren having not raced on Astroturf for close to 3 years, he was expecting a bit of relearning before he was fully up to speed.
Round 1 was pretty damp, and Darren chose to leave the settings of the car the same as he had used at the Storm Valley indoor track just to establish a baseline before we made any changes. The car was ok, but as expected was very aggressive in its steering, which caught Daren out a couple of times as he traversed the different grip levels on the Astro.
For round 2 we started to revert the car back to 'normal' outdoor settings which brought about an instant change as Darren was now able to carve the corners as he wanted. He quickly settled into a pace that nobody could match and was well clear in taking TQ for the round.
Round 3 and we just softened the rear shock oil as we had over compensated and gone a bit heavy for round 2, this instantly felt better and the car was now soaking up the bumps much better and allowing Darren to attack through the bumps and jumps much more. He once again took TQ by a commanding margin to line up 1st on the grid.
For the main final, the track would start to get a little slippery in places again as the moisture started to seep into the astro, but we still decided to lower the ride height of the car a bit to try and make it that bit easier in the sections with more traction. This change worked fine, and despite a couple of crashes in the first couple of laps and a strong challenge from Aaron Girling in the early laps who was driving exceptionally well. After a few minutes Darren got into his rhythm he was able to put his considerable pace advantage to good use and break away. By the end of the 15 minutes, Darren had got close to a 3/4 a lap lead in front of Aaron Girling and 3rd was Bullitt driver Peter Wrigglesworth.
Darren was delighted with the performance of his package for the first time outdoors and found his Bullitt B-219 a revelation with both its drivability and outright power. He commented "I've never had so much power, I can just drive past people in a straight line!"
Next week we hope to be down at Herts on the dirt for some pre Montpellier GP practice….XAfter so many recent races being cancelled, it was with great relief that Darren was finally able to get some outdoor racing under his belt at the Astroturf track at Coventry over the weekend.
